Government announces over £800 million funding package to support specialist research facilities

When we turn on the television, we seem to only hear doom and gloom about the government’s performance and the economy. But thankfully, we can share some good news affecting the health sector.

On the 14th of October 2022, the government announced a funding package allocated by the NIHR to help support specialist research facilities. The funding package will help improve collaboration between scientists and support research into medicine and patient safety. Due to this additional funding, patients will gain improved delivery of health services and innovative new treatments.

Allocation of funding

The new package will comprise £790 million for new treatments, technology, and diagnostics. The remaining £25 million will help educate health providers in improving safety when delivering healthcare. The £790 million allocation of funding will be used by 20 NIHR research centres throughout England, with the remaining funding allocated to 6 NIHR patient safety research centres.

Thérèse Coffey, the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care and Deputy Prime Minister, spoke about the health and care services funding.

“This additional funding will harness the UK’s world-leading innovation and allow research centres up and down the country to attract experts in their field and conduct research that saves lives.”

About the National Institute for Health and Care Research

NIHR is an organisation that provides funding for quality research that helps to improve the health of the community. They invest in expertise and research facilities to support the development of new treatments and technology and enhance patients’ safety. NIHR has been involved in thousands of research studies, including the development of the Oxford AstraZeneca vaccine, for the treatment of COVID-19 and treatment which may be able to slow down the degenerative symptoms of motor neurone disease.

With the UK government currently in turmoil, the funding is at least a promising sign that health is still at the forefront of the leaders’ minds.
